Bhubaneswar: Two persons fell victim to two separate cyber crimes in the Chandrasekharpur police station limits here Tuesday.
While one related to faking of Facebook account to post objectionable pictures, the other saw a youth duped of Rs 20,000 while offering a laptop as “gift”.
The victims who came to file their complaints at the police station were referred to the state cyber cell section of the Crime Branch office in Cuttack.
In the first incident, an unidentified miscreant on Facebook spread vulgar and pornographic images by making a fake account of a person. The victim was identified as Avinash Nayak of Rourkela. Nayak, who works in the Dalmia Cement Company, has been staying in the city at Kanan Vihar phase-II area of Chandrsekharpur.
He was informed by several of his friends that they received friend requests from the fake ID registered in his name with nude models as profile picture. Later, upon examination, he also found that the unknown user has sent several friend requests to the accounts of dealers and officials of Dalmia Cement. The miscreant also sent obscene graphic materials through that fake Facebook account.
After coming to know about the mischief, he lodged a complaint with the Facebook authorities requesting them to terminate the fake account. Following his complaint, the Facebook administration closed the fake account Tuesday evening.
In the other incident, a youth was duped with the promise of a laptop as gift from Paytm, the popular digital wallet system or e-commerce payment company.
The victim identified as Prafulla Kumar Sahoo is a resident of Housing Board Colony in Chandrsekhrapur area. He received a call Sunday from an unknown mobile number (9073579881). The caller told him that he had won a laptop as gift for being a regular user of Paytm services. He has to pay only Rs 5,000 to get the gift. Lured by the offer, he paid the amount immediately. He received another call from the same number Monday and was instructed to pay another Rs 15,000 on account of GST tax which he paid as well.
However, after failing to get any response from the number thereafter, Sahoo contacted the Paytm office in the city. The company officials, however, denied making any such offer.
“I will file a complaint with the cyber cell Wednesday”, Sahoo said.
