Nayagarh: Several transformers and meter boxes installed at public places in this town have been lying uncovered over the years, posing a threat to lives, but the energy department seems unconcerned about the looming hazard, a report said.
Resentment is brewing among the locals over the casual approach of the department.
For instance, a transformer at Rajabagicha has been installed near a private building along the road with hundreds of vehicles plying there every day. Even as locals have been demanding relocation of the transformer for years, the department is yet to take any steps in this regard.
The officials are only buying time for its shifting. This unguarded transformer can cause a major mishap at any moment, said locals.
One more transformer on the way to the new court of Khandapara Road and another at Rajiv Market are also in similar state and pose threat to human and animal lives.
As no iron fence has been put up around the transformers, the roadside vendors are seen selling their wares under these electrical transformers risking their lives. These transformers often generate sparks leaving the locals in panic.
On the other hand, the joint meter boxes installed for market complexes are on the verge of collapse.
One such meter box is at Khandapada Road bus stand. Similar are the conditions of the boxes put up at Park Lane and another near SBI ATM along National Highway-57.
Power distribution company Fedco’s sub-divisional officer Rabindra Kumar Sahoo couldn’t be contacted over the issue while the locals demanded immediate solution to the problems.
