Paradip: The Indian Coast Guard’s capabilities and its presence off Odisha coast was augmented with the arrival of ‘Vijaya’, an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), at the Paradip port Thursday. The ship was received by Coast Guard DIG Rakesh Makwana.
As per reports, ‘Vijaya’ will help in strengthening maritime security along Odisha coastline. Besides, the ship will help to undertake economic zone surveillance and ensure environmental security.
Fishermen stranded in deep sea can also be searched and rescued with the help of the ship, said sources.
Indigenously built, Vijaya is a 98-metre long coast guard vessel and one of the most advanced ships at present. Equipped with modern communication and navigational tools and manned by 12 officers and 91 soldiers, the patrol vessel will provide security to the 480 kms long Odisha coastline. It can move at a speed of 26 nautical miles per hour, informed sources.
The vessel was launched by Defence secretary, Sanjay Mitra September 14.
“Basically Vijaya will provide security to the Odisha coast and its adjoining areas. Apart from this, the ship will help in strengthening the international maritime boundary line,” said the Coast Guard DIG.
‘Vijaya’ can carry a helicopter and its navigation and communication equipments are quite modern, he added.
