Angul: Acting on a tip-off, Sadar police late Sunday night nabbed a notorious criminal following an encounter while the accused with his aides was on his way to plot another crime near Derjang area here in this district.
The accused has been identified as Bilu Khan. As per reports, Khan suffered bullet injuries on his left leg and was rushed to Angul district headquarters hospital (DHH).
After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for the removal of the bullet where his condition is stated to be stable after treatment. Meanwhile, his aides managed to give police a slip and escaped from the spot.
According to police, several criminal cases have been pending against Khan’s name at Banrpal, Nalco and Angul police stations. Apart from this, he was also involved in loot at at a petrol pump at Sardaspur and a robbery near Balaramprasad area of the district a few days back.
He also has his hands on many extortion cases, police said adding that a special team was formed to nab Khan. With the help of police informers, the cops were keeping an eye on the movement of Khan.
Meanwhile, the police team got a tip-off that Khan was heading towards Derjang area with his aides.
Acting on the tip-off, the police team intercepted Khan and his aides and asked them to surrender. However, the criminals opened fire at the cops and tried to escape into the forest.
Retaliating back, the cops also opened fire after which a bullet struck Khan while his accomplices escaped. A case was registered and the cops launched a further probe to elicit information in connection with other cases related to Bilu. They also tried to bust the racket of Bilu and arrest his accomplices.
“He is under treatment. Necessary steps will be taken after there is improvement in his health condition. We will extract information of loot racket and his aides and arrest them all,” said a senior police officer.
