Rasulpur (Jajpur): A farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his house at Dantara village of Gandhana panchayat under Rasulpur block in Jajpur district Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Ghanashyam Mohanty.
Family members spotted Mohanty’s hanging from the ceiling fan and alerted the cops. The body was seized and sent for autopsy while a probe was launched.
According to his family members, Mohanty had taken loan from a bank and cultivated paddy in his agricultural land this Kharif season. He had hoped of good harvest and repay his loans.
However, he suffered crop loss due to cyclone ‘Titli’ and subsequent floods following which he was under sheer mental stress for being unable to repay the loan.
After sensing, he would not be able to repay the loans and run his family after seeing the devastated crop, he slowly began to distance himself from other family members and used to stay alone all the time.
Unable to bear the loan burden, he allegedly took the extreme step and hanged himself, his wife said.
It may be noted here that, a debt-ridden had committed suicide by consuming pesticides in his crop field at Maliguda village under Pottangi police limits in Koraput district November 18.
The deceased farmer was identified as Loknath Pangi.
Unable to see his damaged crops, Pangi consumed pesticides in his crop field. He then returned home and told his wife about it. Soon, the family members rushed him to Pottangi Community Health Centre (CHC) where he died while undergoing treatment.
“He was under severe stress due to crop loss and debt burden. So, he took the extreme step,” his wife said. Besides, Pangi’s wife has lodged a complaint with the local police in this connection.
Similarly, a sharecropper (Gouranga Charan Kap) of Napang village in Kendrapara district allegedly committed suicide due to crop loss caused by the recent Titli cyclone. However, the ADM refuted crop loss and claimed it to be fallout of family feud while a further probe is on.
