Bhubaneswar, March 28: A seven-month-old leopard that was going under medical treatment died Saturday at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP), bringing the total leopard count down to six in the zoo.
The predator died prima facie because of liver and lung infection at the veterinary hospital of the zoo, according to NZP deputy director Jayant Dash. The leopard was rescued from Titilagarh October 14, 2014, and brought to the NZP when it was just two months old, he said.
“The leopard was undergoing treatment for the past several months and did not show any sign of improvement despite out best efforts. We were optimistic about its health, which kept deteriorating. Unfortunately it succumbed to illness,” Dash said, adding the leopard could not be housed in an enclosure as it was being treated at the hospital.
The leopard was rescued by a forest guard from Kalkut forest under Titlagarh forest range in Balangir district October and brought to NZP for medical treatment.
