Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Saturday said a fresh low pressure area (LOPAR) is likely to be formed over the south-east Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas in next 24 hours.
“Under the influence of trough of low at mean sea level over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level, a low pressure area is likely to develop over the same region during the next 24 hours. It is likely to become more marked thereafter,” read a bulletin of IMD.
Speaking to Orissa POST, IMD additional director general (ADG) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the low pressure is likely to form Sunday or by Monday morning.
“As per possible cyclone is concern, it will only be clear after the cyclone forms. At present, we can give prediction for the next five days. At this point of time, we cannot predict about the cyclone,” he added.
One or two models indicate that the system may become a cyclone, he said, adding, “It will be premature to say about it now.”
Official sources in the Bhubaneswar Met office said there will hardly be any effect on the state and there will be no rain in the next five days.
The system may not influence much as weather will be mostly dry in the state. However, there is forecast of light to moderate rainfall in north coastal and coastal Odisha, a source said.
Meanwhile, temperature continues to dip in many places including interior pockets of the state. The minimum temperature was lowest at Phulbani with 6.8 degrees Celsius while it was 9 degrees Celsius at Daringbadi, 10.5 degrees at Sundargarh and 10.6 degrees at Keonjhar.
