Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high at SUM hospital in the Capital city following the death of patient due to alleged medical negligence here Tuesday morning. Angry kin of the deceased patient staged a sit-in protest in-front of the hospital, demanding their money back.
On receipt of information, Khandagiri police reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. However, the agitators continued their agitation until the hospital authorities assured to provide Rs 70,000 compensation for medical negligence.
The deceased has been identified as Antaryami Sethy of Salia Sahi slum.
According to family members, Sethy suffered severe burn injuries after coming in contact with a live wire while working at a temple in Shastri Nagar November 5. Locals rescued him in a critical condition and admitted to SUM hospital.
Doctors claimed that he needed to undergo an operation and demanded Rs 30,000. Likewise, the doctors demanded Rs 2 lakhs on some or the other pretext from Sethy’s family members.
However, Sethy’s condition deteriorated Monday night and he breathed his last as no doctors attended him. Accusing the doctors of negligence and bungling money on false promises, relatives of the deceased staged protest, sources said.
The agitators relented after the hospital authorities returned Rs 70,000 to the bereaved family.
