Bhubaneswar, April 1: Tension prevailed at the Capital Hospital here Monday when a newborn baby was dropped off accidentally by a nurse at the labour room. Police arrived on the scene and intervened when the baby’s parents and local people were agitated over the issue.
Sudarshan Samantray, baby’s father, said his son had died due to negligence of the doctor and the staffers. “How can they be so careless while holding a baby in their arms,” he said while crying outside the labour room.
However, PB Patnaik, director of Capital Hospital, denied that the baby had died and insisted that he was alive and undergoing treatment.
The delivery of Gitanjali Jaysingh, baby’s mother, was being conducted under observation of Renubala Dey.
It’s not the first time when people have blamed the doctors and staffers of negligence at the hospital. Almost every week, a death is ascribed to their negligence and apathy towards the poor patients.
Recently, a man died of snakebite as he was not provided anti-venom immediately by doctors at the hospital. The same day, another patient bitten by a snake was given only half of the required dose and referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital. He died on his way to the SCB.
