Cuttack: The Orissa High Court will hear the regular bail plea of Punjilal Meher, the mastermind in the sensational parcel blast case January 17. The division bench of Justice JP Das, while hearing the bail plea of Meher Tuesday, posted the next hearing to January 17.
Earlier, the Additional District Judge (ADJ) court had rejected the bail application of Punjilal Meher in the month of June. Meher, who is now lodged at the Patnagarh sub-jail had then moved to the High Court.
It may be noted here that Meher was arrested by the Crime Branch Special Investigation Team (SIT) April 24 in connection with the parcel bomb case that claimed the lives of newly-wed Soumya Shekhar Sahu and his grandmother Jenamani while the former’s wife Reena Sahu survived with critical burn injuries.
On the orders of the CM Naveen Patnaik, the SIT took over the case March 23 and arrested Meher April 25. He had been taken him on a two-phase remand April 26 and May 2.
Meher had been taken to Raipur by the SIT on multiple occasions in a bid to piece together a complex revenge plot he had allegedly weaved to eliminate a colleague. The story has since been adapted by Sony TV for its popular ‘Crime Patrol’ series.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch had submitted a 300-page preliminary charge sheet against Meher, in Patnagarh SDJM Court August 20. In the chargesheet, the Crime Branch had included the statement of 72 witnesses and eyewitnesses.
