Lakhanpur: A day after 10 persons drowned in a boat capsize in river Mahanadi in Kendrapara district, a fisherman drowned as a boat capsized in Hirakud reservoir under Lakhanpur police limits in Jharsuguda district Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Magatiri Seth (65) of Limtikrapada in Bagmunda. Lakhanpur police registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem. The mishap has spread shockwaves in the area.
The incident occurred when Seth was catching fish in the reservoir in the morning. He was casting the net when he accidentally got entangled in it as the boat capsized. He struggled to free himself from the net but got further snarled and ultimately drowned in the reservoir.
Some fellow fisherman rushed to his rescue but it was too late. The fishermen along with the villagers and the family members of the deceased fished out the body after struggling for long hours.
Seth is survived by four sons. Fellow fishermen demanded financial assistance for the bereaved family from the state government.
