Bhubaneswar, April 9: Wonderful handmade clothes woven by the artisans of Tamil Nadu captivated the visitors who came to see an exclusive exhibition of handloom products of Co-optex, held at Kasturba Nari Mahal in the city, Thursday.
As many as 500 various types of clothes were displayed in the exhibition organised by Co-optex, the Tamil Nadu Handlooms Weavers Co-operative Society Limited.
“We have brought some beautiful saris made from pure cotton. These are based on a newly computerised design applied in the handloom technology. The cost of these saris is in the range of `5000 to `20,000. Surely visitors will like it at their first sight,” said K Yuva Raj, senior regional manager.
Computer designed handloom products are made of pure silk of Kancheepuram, Arani, soft silk etc. These apart there are cotton saris from Coimbatore, Salem, Maduari, and saris made of Kerala cotton. Besides, some other products such as bed sheets, towels, lungees, dhotis, dress material for kids of all age groups are also available.
The visitors who came to the exhibition on its first day were more interested in the cotton clothes and saris. “One can easily recognise whether any product is made of pure cotton or not. And here, all products come from Tamil Nadu; therefore those are mostly cotton. I bought three clothes, all cotton, for my family members,” said 55-year-old Rajani Tripathy.
Tamil Nadu state government made an initiative to make people aware of the skill-levels of the artisans, who made the products that were exhibited. Notably, bio-data of the artisans were attached on their respective hand-made products so that their skill-level and names did not faded away from the buyers memory so easily.
For the first time handloom products from Tamil Nadu were exhibited in Bhubaneswar. “We have already three branches in Orissa – one each in Berhampur, Rayagada and Paralakhemundi. We have planned to set up another branch of handloom products of our state very soon. So far as this fair, government of Tamil Nadu has allowed 20 per cent rebate on all products so that the consumers can purchase those at fair price,” said Yuva Raj.
Additional commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation D Brundha, inaugurated the handloom exhibition. The exhibition will continue till April 13.
