New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday directed the Odisha government to fill the vacancies in subordinate courts and improve the infrastructure of the judiciary in the state.
A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, L Nagesawar Rao and Sanjay Kishan Kaul directed the state government to fill the vacancies and file a compliance report on the status.
“It is stated that 211 court rooms are under construction, 94 of them are to be completed in six months. The government should take steps to complete the construction in the mentioned time,” the bench observed.
The CJI asked the state whether they are running some courts from rented accommodations on which state government counsel replied affirmatively.
The bench also directed the state government to complete the construction of residential accommodations within a year.
It is to be mentioned that the apex court is hearing a matter pertaining to vacancies and infrastructure in the subordinate courts in several states. The state government had filed an affidavit earlier stating the number of courts and strength of judges and other staff in the subordinate courts.
