Berhampur: Around 40 farmers of Thuruburai under Shergada block of Ganjam district Friday sought the intervention of the Collector in payment of dues by a rice miller.
Angry farmers picketed the collectorate and demanded immediate steps, alleging non-payment of their dues by the miller Laxmi Nrusingha.
“The miller bought paddy from us and is yet to pay the dues. He is avoiding us when we approach him for money,” the farmers alleged.
According to sources, more than 40 farmers from Thuruburai had sold their paddy to Nursingha. However, they alleged, even after 13 months, they have not received any payment for the sale.
They further alleged that despite having raised the issue with the local police, tehsildar and BDO a number of times, nothing has happened.
“The local police, tehsildar and BDO have turned a blind eye to our complaints. With no options left, we have sought the help of the Collector,” the irate farmers said.
“The miller is not giving our dues citing false reasons. It’s disappointing that we have to fight for the dues. It’s our hard earned money,” the farmers’ leader said.
Additional District Magistrate Kabindra Kumar Sahoo said a case will be registered and necessary action will be taken against the miller if found guilty.
Responding to the allegations, Sahoo said, “I have had discussions with the cooperative society. I will try to sort out the issue in a couple of days. If the miller will not co-operate with us, then a case will be registered and action would be taken against him.”
