Bhubaneswar, April 26: Heavy rainfall lashed most parts of the state as the Meteorological centre in the city Sunday predicted thunder squalls accompanied with hail and gusty surface winds reaching speeds up to 70kmph prevailing over a few parts of Orissa in the next 24 hours.
Weather officials have recorded heavy rainfall of 73.6mm in Puri followed by 50.6mm in the capital city, 47mm in Dhenkanal, 35.4mm in Phulbani and 33.5mm in Balasore in the past 24 hours.
“The strong trough line is steadily moving in the easterly direction as an effect of which many parts of the state are witnessing heavy rainfall. Light to moderate rainfall or thundershower may continue to occur at a few places over the northern districts and one or two places in southern parts of the state in the next 24 hours,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
The current system has led to a dip in mercury level with the highest temperature of 38°C being mapped at Bolangir followed by 37.9°C at Talcher Sunday. Many other parts of the state recorded a maximum temperature of around 35°C.
The Met centre which earlier said that the system will continue till April 28 has now released a fresh statement saying the system might extend till April 30 and continue to trigger rainfall and thundershowers over the state after which there will be a gradual increase in day temperature.
Skies will remain partly cloudy over the capital city and adjoining areas with minimal chances of rain and thundershower in the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature may remain around 37°C over the city Monday.
