Rayagada, April 28: Father of a woman of New Colony area in Rayagada town Tuesday filed a complaint with the police that her in-laws had attempted to kill her by setting her on fire for more dowry.
The woman named Parvati Panda had sustained 90 per cent burns Monday. Her in-laws had claimed that she had sustained burn injuries after her sari accidentally caught fire while cooking.
However, Parvati’s father Prakash Chandra Panda who is a native of Barasingh village under Sorada police limits in Ganjam district after reaching here Tuesday lodged a complaint against her in-laws with the police accusing them of attempting to kill her.
The complaint said, he had married off his daughter to Rabi Shankar, son of Shyam Sundar Panda of New Colony area around two years and five months ago. At the time of marriage, he had given `73,000 cash and 35 gm gold ornaments to the groom as dowry.
However, after six months of their marriage, Parvati’s husband and in-laws’ started torturing her physically and mentally for more dowry.
The matter was resolved through mutual negotiations between both parties in presence of Sorada police February 25, 2013. Rabi Shankar had also given a written submission to the police that he would not torture his wife further. But, he later started torturing her.
Parvati had given birth to twin babies in MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur four months ago. But, her husband and in-laws did not take proper care of babies due to which both of them died within a month, Parvati’s father alleged.
Police registered a case under sections 34, 307, 326 of Indian Penal Code and 4 of Dowry Prevention Act. Police also detained the victim’s husband Rabi Shankar Panda and father in-law Shyam Sundar Panda in this connection. Further investigation into the incident is on.
