Bhubaneswar, April 29: The Centre has decided not to release grants to the state for modernisation of police from the current financial year, according to the recommendation of the 14th finance commission, director general of police (DGP) Sanjeev Marik said here Wednesday.
“The Centre had been providing Rs 127 crore for the past 15 years for the modernisation of the police force in terms of things such as mobility, equipment and infrastructure, but now it has decided to stop funding under the heads. We have asked the state government to make alternative arrangements and mobilise its own resources from this year,” Marik said.
This decision of the Centre would be a major roadblock for the state police, he said.
The state government will urge the Centre to reconsider its decision to stop providing such financial assistance, ha said after attending state-level empowered committee on modernization of police, chaired by Chief Secretary GC Pati.
In line with the commissions’ recommendations, the Centre has stopped providing funds under eight schemes, including modernization of police forces, National e-Governance Plan, Backward Religions Grant Funds (BRGF), Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Sashaktikaran Abhiyaan (RGPSA), National Mission on Food Processing and Tourism Infrastructure.
