BHUBANESWAR: Jazz fans of the Capital revelled at the eighth edition of International Jazz Festival 2019 organised by Indian Council of Cultural Relations at Bhanja Kala Mandap here Tuesday.
Pulsar Trio from Germany comprising sitarist Matyas Wolter, pianist Beate Wein and drummer Aaron Christ orchestrated a brilliant night of jazz by releasing their albums ‘Zoo of Songs’, ‘Erpelparka Suite’ and ‘Caethes Traum’ among others.
This was the band’s first-ever performance in the city. Talking to Orissa post, founder of Pulsar Trio, sitarist Wolter said, “We performed on the original songs that we had created at the event. I learnt the complex subtleties of sitar and classical music under master Subroto Roy Chowdhury (Senia Gharana). I spent more than five years with my teacher at his place in Kolkata.”
“After he passed away in 2017, I continued my studies under the guidance of famous Sarod-master Irfan Khan (Shajahanpur-Lucknow Gharana). We tried to blend eastern classical and western music in our songs. In our team, I am the one who performs on classical music. The other two perform on western music,” he added.
Beate Wein said, “I heard about Bhubaneswar getting the ‘smart city’ status. After gaining first-hand experience of the city, I find it to be every bit true. I am performing for the last 14 years and through our music, we have tried to create something unique for the people of the city.”
Percussionist Aaron Christ said, “We try to provide all aspects of music for our audience. During our performance, we showcased fast, slow and euphoric music varying the pace according to the mood of the audience.”
In spring 2007, Matyas Wolter and Beate Wein met at a musical event. Both of them got to know each other in a more personal way at Kolkata during Wolter´s annual visit to India. The first attempts to combine the sitar with piano started in Potsdam, Germany. Not much later, Aaron Christ joined in and the trio was born.
