Harabhanga, Dec 14: A youth was killed and his mother sustained grievous injuries after they were attacked by another youth following a dispute in cricket field near Bukesingha under this block of Boudh district Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Jadav Dehury (28).
Sources said a quarrel broke out between Dehury and Biren Barik (32) over an issue while other village youths were busy preparing for a cricket tournament scheduled to begin Monday.
As the war of words intensified, Barik picked up a cricket bat and hit Dehury’s head, leading to his death on the spot.
On hearing the news of her son’s demise, Sourendri (60) rushed to the field. Barik also did not spare the woman and attacked her with an axe.
Villagers admitted Sourendri to a hospital. She was later discharged from the hospital after preliminary treatment. The accused surrendered before Harabhanga police.
Police registered a case of murder (46/14) and sent the body for post-mortem.
