Cuttack, May 20: The delay in submission of a report in a case where insects were found in mid-day meals served at Srikatanuapada Nodal Upper Primary School of Brahmagiri block in Puri district has irked the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) which asked the school and mass education secretary to submit an explanation.
According to sources, school and mass education secretary Usha Padhee apologised for the delay in submitting the report and assured the rights body that such instance would not be repeated in future.
Padhee was directed by NHRC to appear before it April 27, 2015 and submt detailed report on the incident. The incident pertains to July 23, 2013 when curry prepared with soya chunks had insects. The school cook who prepared the meal did not inform school authorities about this. However, when it was found that soya chunks were infested with insects, the curry was not served to the students. Instead, biscuits were served to the students that day.
Meanwhile, Padhi in her report has stated that the cook and helper of the school were responsible for the incident for which the headmaster has already issued notices to the erring persons. She assured the commission that mid-day meal scheme in the school has been functioning smoothly.
