Bhubaneswar, May 22: The ongoing heatwave conditions continued to paralyse life in the state with six places recording temperatures above 45°C. Jharsuguda remained hottest for the second consecutive day at 45.8°C Friday.
Titilagarh remained second hottest at 45.7°C followed by Hirakud at 45.6°C, Bhawanipatna at 45.5°C, Sambalpur at 45.3°C and Bolangir at 45.1°C. Industrial towns of Talcher and Angul recorded 44° and 43.7°C respectively Friday.
The state capital also sizzled at a high of 40.6°C with the maximum humidity mapped at 81 per cent over the city. Frequent power cuts added to the woes of residents already reeling under the severe heatwave and humidity.
The Met department here has said interior parts will continue to witness extreme heatwave conditions while the coastal belt might witness a decline in temperatures with untimely rain towards May-end.
“Light rain or thundershower may occur at one or two places over coastal Orissa and adjoining districts of Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Koraput and Rayagada, and the rest of the state will witness clear skies,” stated a Met bulletin here.
Weather experts said while there was a possibility of mercury coming down slightly due to rain over the coastal belt, they said humidity might rise even further due to the rainfall, leading to increased chances of people suffering sunstrokes.
The Met office has predicted cloudy skies for the capital city and neighbourhood with chances of rain or thundershower for Saturday
