Cuttack, May 23: Badambadi police Friday arrested Yunus Khan and Sanjiv Kumar Behera – both key associates of notorious gangster Tito – and seized two pistols, ammunition and three mobile phones from them.
Both Yunus and Sanjiv were involved in a spate of crimes in Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts and were on top of the police’s most-wanted lists.
A third member of the gang managed to escape during the police raid, twin city police commissioner RP Sharma said in a press meet.
“Interrogation of the gangster duo elicited crucial details regarding the illegal arms trade and tender fixing rackets. The details will help police track down and arrest other criminals involved in the rackets,” Sharma said.
Yunus is a key member of the gang hailing from Hajipur under Biridi police limits in Jagatsinghpur district while Sanjiv is a native of Sankharisahi under the same police limits, the commissioner said. The trio was heading towards Bikash Bhawan on a motorbike when DCP Sanjiv Arora, acting on a tip-off, formed a special squad to nab them.
Badambadi inspector Biranchi Narayan Pati and Mangalabag inspector Arun Kumar Sahu along with the special squad conducted a surprise raid and arrested Yunus and Sanjiv while the third accomplice managed to flee.
Police said the accused were plotting to loot a businessman near the Jhanjir Mangala branch of State Bank of India. Police have registered a case and have launched a manhunt to arrest the other accused.
