Bhubaneswar: The blazing sun continued to make life miserable as eight more people died of sunstroke in Orissa Sunday, taking the season’s toll to 38 this summer. One each sunstroke death was reported unofficially from Ghasipura in Keonjhar, Chandikhol and Panikoili in Jajpur, Paralakhemnudi in Gajapati, Rayagada, Bantala in Angul, Beguniapada in Ganjam, and Sambalpur town. The special relief commissioner’s office was yet to confirm the deaths. Heatwave conditions will prvail till May 31, Met has predicted. Four places recorded temperatures above 46 degree Celsius Sunday, keeping people mostly indoors. The industrial district of Angul remained the hottest with 46.7 degree Celsius followed by Sambalpur 46.6, Titilagarh 46.5 and Hirakud 46.4 degree C Sunday. The state capital broke its last year’s record and sizzled at 45 degree C. Last year, the maximum heat it experienced was 44.2 degree C. However, a welcome drizzle in the evening provided a sigh of relief to the residents. Cuttack continued to record temperature above 40 degree C. The silver city marked a maximum temperature of 41.8 degree C Saturday. As many as seven places have recorded temperatures above 45 degree C. They included Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bhawanipatna and Balangir. Mercury touched 40 degree C in 19 places across the state. Light rainfall was recorded at Gopalpur, Talcher, Jharsuguda and Puri. Weather office here predicted rain or thundershowers at one or two places along the coastal stretch, and severe heat wave conditions over a few parts of the state in the next 24 hours.
