Bhubaneswar, June 4: The Southwest monsoon, which was slightly delayed, is set to arrive in Kerala within the next 24 hours and is expected to land in Orissa by next week, the Met department said Thursday.
Pre-monsoon rain was witnessed in several parts of the country, leading to hot and humid conditions that are conducive to the onset of monsoon.
“Southwest monsoon was stationary in the Arabian Sea for the past few days while the current rain in Kerala has been favourable for the advancement of monsoon. Pre-monsoon rain has continued to occur in parts of Orissa. If the condition remains the same for the next few days, we can expect the monsoon to make its onset in Orissa very soon,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
The Met department here has also predicted heavy rainfall over the coastal belt while a few parts of interior Orissa may witness light showers in the next 24 hours.
“Moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershower may occur at many places over coastal parts while light to moderate rainfall may occur at a few places over the districts of interior Orissa in the next 24 hours,” stated a Met bulletin here.
The capital city continued to witness hot weather as it again recorded mercury at 40.3°C, the hottest in the state. Most other places recorded normal temperatures Thursday.
The Met recorded rainfall of 37 mm in Daringbadi followed by 31.6mm in Jharsuguda, 26mm in Hirakud and 14mm in Titilagarh in the past 24 hours. Other places including Bhawanipatna, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul and Chandbali received light rainfall.
Met has also foreseen an increase in day temperature from June 9 while isolated rainfall activity will also continue over most parts of the state.
Weather over the capital city and adjoining areas is expected to remain cloudy while light rain or thundershower may occur over the city in the next 24 hours.
