Rourkela, June 6: Protesting the suspension of a girl student and alleged misbehaviour by chairman, students of Homeopathic College at Nayabazar in Sector 21 here staged a demonstration in front of the college gate Saturday.
Around 20 students sat in front of the gate for over three hours seeking justice for the girl, Dibya Swarupa Das, and action against the college chairman for his alleged misbehaviour with the students.
The agitating students also warned to continue the stir until girl’s suspension order was revoked and basic problems faced by the college addressed.
While students stuck to their demands, college representatives tried to pacify the agitators. The representatives assured the students that the suspension order will be revoked and the problems of the
college discussed in a meeting with college chairman June 17. Following the assurance of the college authorities, students relented and withdrew their strike.
According to students, 22 junior doctors, including the girl student, of the college were entitled to receive `9,000 monthly allowance during their training at the college for a period of one year. As Dibya Swarupa did not receive her allowances for two months, she approached the college chairman SK Rout and requested him to address her problem.
However, the chairman allegedly misbehaved with her, instead of paying any heed to her demands. As she raised the issue of misbehaviour by the chairman during a meeting of the college committee, it suspended the girl from the college.
Accusing the college authorities of shielding the chairman, the students sat in front of the gate from 10 am. They relented after the intervention of the college authorities and called off their protest. However, the students threatened to launch a stir again after June 17 if their demands were not met.
On the other hand, Rout dismissed the allegation of misbehaviour with the girl against him. “The allegation made by the girl is false and incorrect. Her allowances were suspended as she did not report on duty regularly,” Rout said.
