Bhubaneswar, June 11: The capital city, which was bearing the brunt of the heatwave in the state for the last few weeks, welcomed Thursday evening’s brief downpour that was accompanied by a decrease in temperature to 38.7°C.
However, the Met department said Thursday the heatwave is yet to be over, as hot weather conditions along with thunder squalls will prevail over most parts of the state in the next 24 hours. Friday is expected to be a cloudy day with the maximum temperature predicted to touch 37°C.
Several parts of the state continued to witness hot weather Thursday, with the Met department recording a maximum of 43°C in Bolangir followed by 42.5°C in Sundargarh and 42°C in Titilagarh in the past 24 hours. Eight places recorded temperatures above the 40° mark Thursday. Keonjhar received moderate rainfall of 16mm while the amount of rain that the capital city received Thursday evening remained under-traced.
“The condition is getting better. Wind flow is smooth over most parts of the state and it will continue in the following days. Mercury may not go as high as it is now for the next 48 hours. Monsoon is all set to make onset over the state June 14,” said Met director Sarat Sahu. According to the Met bulletin, heavy rainfall will continue to lash parts of interior Orissa from June 14-16, which will mark the onset of the southwest monsoon in the state.
