Berhampur: The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally decided to act against those whose bovines go astray and cause traffic problems and other such menace in the city roads and around.
BMC Commissioner Chakravarti Singh has chalked out a plan to work on this civic issue by imposing penalty on such owners.
As per sources, the BMC has decided to identify the street cattle owners by tagging system. Each cattle is given a specific number, so that it is easy to identify the cattle and their owner. The names of the cattle owners are registered with the BMC with specific numbers given to the cattle.
Tagging of the animals has started from the month of July and has been finished in 30 wards.
On the other hand, the milkmen are opposing the rule of the BMC. They submitted a memorandum to the BMC commissioner Tuesday in this regard.
According to the milkmen, their economic condition does not allow them to afford a cowshed. If the BMC constructed common cow sheds in every ward of the city then they would not have to release their animals on the road.
They further said that in the areas like Bijepur, Khalasi Sahi, Balajipentha, Golapalli Sahim, Goilindi, Khodasingi and Lanjipalli, there is enough government land on which the BMC can construct common cowsheds.
So, it is the responsibility of the BMC to construct the cowsheds and even after it if the animals go astray then the BMC can charge penalty, they opined.
BMC Commissioner Chakravarti Singh had a discussion with the milkmen in this regard where he assured to identify government lands in order to construct cowsheds.
