Assembly polls: 26 tainted netas defeat candidates with clean background

Bhubaneswar: As many as 26 out of 67 winners with declared criminal cases have won the last elections to Odisha Legislative Assembly against the runners-up with a clean background.

An analysis of vote share and margin of victory of winners made by Association of Democratic Reforms and Odisha Election Watch said out of the 26 winners, two have won with more than 20 per cent vote margin.

One of them Soumya Ranjan Patnaik (BJD) from Khandapada Assembly constituency won with 60.5 per cent margin of victory.

The report said out of 38 winners with a clean background who have won against runner up with declared criminal cases, six have won with more than 25 per cent margin of victory.

As many as 45 winners won with 50 per cent and above of the total votes polled in their constituency and 101 winners won with less than 50 of the total votes polled in their constituency.

Out of 112 winners of BJD, 68 had won with less than 50 per cent of total votes polled in their constituencies. Eight out of nine winners from Congress and 100 per cent winners each from BJP, CPI(M) and Independent have won with less than 50 per cent of total votes polled in their constituency.

As many as 15 out of 67 winners analysed with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50 per cent and above.

The analysis said 33 out of 95 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50 per cent and above.

As many as four winners have won with a margin of victory of less than 1,000 votes while two winners have won with more than 40 per cent of margin of victory.

Similarly, 37 out of 95 crorepati winners have won against non-crorepati runners. Three of winners have won with more than 20 per cent margin of victory.

There are 22 non-crorepati winners who have won against crorepati runners up. Two of them have won with more than 25 per cent of vote share.

Out of the 13 women who had won the election, Latika Pradhan (BJD) from Kabisuryanagar Constituency has won the seat with the highest vote share of 62.87 per cent and 33.38 per cent of margin of victory.

The analysis said out of total 60 re-elected winners 20 have won with more than 50 per cent of vote share and 12 re-elected winners have won with less than 5 per cent of margin of victory where as only eight have won with more than 20 per cent margin.

SR Patnaik has the highest vote share of 74.34 per cent followed by Naveen Patnaik (BJD) contesting from Hinjli with 66.32 per cent and Latika Pradhan (BJD) with 62.87 per cent.

Markanda Muduli (Independent), contesting from Rayagada, CS Razen Ekka (Cong) vying for Rajgangpur Assembly seat and Bhupinder Singh (BJD) contesting from Narla have the least vote share during 2019 election.

While the vote share of Muduli was 30.21 per cent, Ekka polled 30.98 per cent of the total votes polled in his constituency and Singh polled only 31.12 per cent of total votes polled.
