Malkangiri, July 21: Even as it has been a year since B Yakub, a Class IX student of IMST School here, had lost his right hand while working as a labourer to buy his school dress, he has not given up the desire to excel in studies.
The boy was mobbed by his classmates as well as teachers when he came to the school Monday to resume his studies. A wave of joy swept the atmosphere when he reached the school premises to attend the classes.
Yakub hails from a poor family of Korukonda block in the district. He started working as a labourer at a road construction project June 1, 2014 under PMGSY programme as he had not enough money to buy a pair of school uniform. While working under the supervision of contractor Abhay Swain, he inadvertently touched an 11 KV live wire with an aluminum rod. Yakub sustained burn injuries all over his body. He was first rushed to the district headquarters hospital and later to King George Government Hospital at Visakhapatnam. However, doctors amputated his right hand due to severe infection. Veins and tissues of his left hand were also damaged in the mishap.
Meanwhile, the administration had finished its responsibility by providing some financial assistance. However, Yakub was not bogged down by the adverse situation. Now, he wants to continue studies after recuperating from the mishap. The teachers of the school are also excited seeing his confidence. The boy cannot write any more after losing right hand and sustaining grievous injuries in the left hand.
Principal I V Primroj of the school said, “We are really happy to see him back. We would try our best to provide him adequate support. Though he cannot write, help of a scribe would be taken to write his dictations on answer sheets during the examination.”
An ultramodern prosthetic hand has been planted in place of the amputated hand while special clothes have been designed for him to attend the classes. The school management has left no stone unturned to ensure comfort for Yakub, Primroj said.
Yakub said, “I want to do well in studies. My friends and classmates have encouraged me to start it afresh. However, I would not be able to show my dancing skills and write on my own.”
