Kutra: A 16-year-old deaf and dumb girl was allegedly raped by two youths over a period of six months and impregnated in Sundargarh district, police said.
The matter came to light after the survivor’s father lodged a complaint at the Kutra police station Saturday. She is now six months pregnant. This has dealt a heavy blow to her poor parents who are labourers.
Police detained one of the youths and has launched an investigation. The incident shocked the area and people demanded stringent action against the accused youths and compensation for the girl’s family.
The incident occurred when her parents were away from home for work during daytime. The two youths allegedly raped her repeatedly over a period of six months. The girl did not inform her parents about her ordeal due to fear.
The parents suspected the girl after she started showing signs of pregnancy. They questioned her and came to know about the youths.
Local Anganwadi staffer Kumari Gudia heard about her pregnancy and visited the girl’s house to confirm facts. She held a probe and informed the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) about the incident.
The CDPO found the claims true during a probe Saturday and prepared a mother and child health card for the girl. The CDPO and other officials tried to rehabilitate the girl at a short-stay home in Sundargarh, but were disappointed after the latter refused admission demanding a police FIR. She was then brought back and handed over to her father.
