Bhubaneswar, August 2: The onion price which has been going up for the past few weeks has reached Rs 50 Sunday making it far-fetched for a layman.
FromRs 20 in June to Rs 35 towards the third week of July and Rs 50 in August the kitchen staple has recorded a steep rise of almost 150 per cent within one and a half months in some parts of the state.
While onion is being sold at Rs 40-45 in the Capital city and its neighbourhood, it is sold for Rs 50 in parts of southern Orissa, especially in Sunabeda in Koraput district.
Sources at Aiginia, the major Mandi for onion and potato here, said onion crunch and its high price from the source market (outside Orissa) has led to the soaring of onion price.
Bhubaneswar Unit-1 market general secretary Gayadhar Swain told Orissa POST that until the new crop arrives in the market the price may keep rising further.
Earlier, Food Minister Sanjay Das Burma had said the price of food articles especially pulses, edible oil and onion are showing a rising trend because of loss of crop in key production areas due to unseasonal rains.
