Cuttack, Dec 22: Even as speculations are rife over the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) taking its probe into the multi-crore chit fund scam in the state a step further, two senior officials of the central investigating agency Monday visited the police headquarters here Monday.
A two-member team comprising CBI joint director Suman Bala Sahu and superintendent of police MK Sinha came to the city in the afternoon triggering a flurry of activity at the police headquarters, including the crime branch office. The CBI officers also held discussion with the director general of police Sanjeev Marik for nearly two hours.
While the CBI officers did not disclose about the discussion to mediapersons, DGP Marik obliged the media giving a statement that the visit of the central investigating agency officers to the police headquarters on the day was purely a ‘courtesy visit’ and had nothing specific about the ongoing chit fund scam investigation.
“The CBI joint director paid a courtesy visit to the police headquarters here”, said the DGP adding that the CBI officers also thanked the State police for its cooperation extended to the central agency.
Following the Supreme Court order, a special investigation team (SIT) of CBI is now investigating the chit fund scam in the State. Marik further clarified that the CBI joint director Suman Bala Sahu is not part of the SIT, which is investigating into the money trail and conspiracy angle of some 44 chit fund companies that have duped lakhs of innocent investors in the state.
Marik informed that the police headquarters has already received the intimation from CBI about the arrest and remand of DSP Pramod Kumar Panda, who was previously working in crime branch. “The immediate follow-up action in this case is to put the arrested officer under suspension and necessary steps would be taken in this regard”, Marik said.
