Bhubaneswar: A 30-year-old man from the state and the only bread earner of his family recently met with an accident leading to massive injury to his jaws and face. The head-on collision of his motorbike with another vehicle almost smashed most of his face.
In the process of his surgery it was found that the victim, Bramhananda Giri, has smashed his nasal bone and has an open and destroyed jaw due to the impact of the accident.
The patient, who was bleeding profusely, was brought in a critical situation to a city-based hospital. However as the patient was shifted to another hospital within the Golden Hours, his life was saved by a team of doctors.
“He was in a terrible state when first brought to the hospital. His face was smashed and his nasal bones were non-existent. As he had already lost a lot of blood, we first decided to take him for blood transfusion. When he was stable post operation, we went ahead with the definitive surgery. We reconstructed the nose with a local flap tissue. The lips and both the upper and lower jaws were corrected,” said Dr Akshay Rout, a plastic surgeon at BR Kalinga Hospital in the city.
Due to the impact of the accident, the victim does not remember much about the accident but photographs of his condition when brought to the hospital still scare his family members. He said, “I do not remember much after the collision. During the collision I thought I would not survive but miracle happened as the doctors gave me a new lease of life. Immediate admission to hospital in critical condition and prompt action by the doctors saved my life. I am stable and fine now.”
Around half of all deaths on Indian roads include mainly motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists.
The PRS Legislative Research Reports in 2015 suggested there were about 5 lakh road accidents in India which killed about 1.5 lakh people and injured about five lakh people.
