Delhi presses button; Not Shah-een Bagh but Shah-Modi feel the current

New Delhi: As Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept away the Delhi election; pictures of a poster clicked outside the AAP headquarters in Delhi are doing rounds on social media.

The poster shows a picture of Home Minister Amit Shah and the caption, “Current Laga Kya? (did you feel the current)” This is being presumed as a jibe to the Home Minister’s comments during an election rally at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in January of this year. While on the election train, Shah asked his electorate to press the electronic voting machine (EVM) button so hard that the current would move to Shaheen Bagh where protests are on the verge of entering day-60.

Sitting AAP MLA from Okhla constituency, Amanatullah Khan told media persons today, “Delhi ki janata ne aaj BJP aur Amit Shah ji ko current lagane ka kaam kiya hai, ye kaam ki jeet huyi aur nafrat ki haar.” This translates to the people of Delhi have done the deed of passing current to Mr Amit Shah and the BJP, adding that this is a win for work and a loss for hatred. Referring to his own constituency and vote margin, Khan said that it is not him but the voters who broke the record.

Several of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislators and cabinet ministers attempted to invoke public sentiment by referring to the protest site in Delhi’s Okhla constituency where women and children have been sitting in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National People’s Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Other leaders such as Minister of State (MoS) for Finance, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma also made comments during the election campaign that were marred with controversy. During his address to the Rajya Sabha, AAP Member of Parliament (MP) Sanjay Singh had questioned Home Minister Amit Shah’s “terrorist” jibe at sitting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who is set to return to a second term in power. Singh maintained that the AAP ran an issue-based campaign that focused on basic necessities such as water, electricity, education and healthcare. He also stressed the party’s proposal to award a compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of martyred soldiers.
