Kolkata, Sept 21: The leadership vacuum created in the BCCI following president Jagmohan Dalmiya’s demise will be filled only after board secretary Anurag Thakur calls a special general meeting.

“In the BCCI constitution 16/d it is stated that in case of death of president, a notice has to be issued by BCCI secretary for a special AGM. Within 21 days the special AGM should take place where the interim president will be chosen,” a BCCI official told. He also added that senior BCCI vice-president CK Khanna may succeed Dalmiya for an interim period till the next elections are conducted.

The selection or election of the president will not be the easiest of jobs given that BCCI is in a limbo in the current scenario. While IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla’s name is doing the rounds, the UPCA president and Congress leader would require support from the eastern state in order to become the president.

Shukla himself refused to comment on the issue. “Let us not talk about who succeeds him (Dalmiya). These are petty matters. Let’s instead remember, how Dalmiya changed the face of cricket all over the world,” Shukla pointed out.

As per the BCCI constitution, Thakur will have to convene a special general body meeting to elect the president but it is still not clear whether he can do so considering the next date of the working committee will only be decided after Supreme Court gives its verdict on whether N Srinivasan can board meetings.

Noble gesture

New Delhi: BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who left for heavenly abode Sunday, has donated his eyes to Vanmukta Eye Bank, a part of the city’s Susrut Eye Foundation and Research Centre. “It may be recalled that social welfare programmes about ‘Eradication of Blindness’ which included restoration of eye-sight through cornea grafting and transplantations were initiated by Mr Dalmiya earlier,” BCCI was quoted as saying in a release here Sunday.
