Bhubaneswar, Sept 21: The changing scenario in the labour market, globalisation of jobs and international recognition of certification has necessitated review of our strategies in technical education, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.
With fast industrialisation and globalisation, the engineering and professional segments need to be treated differently to cater to the need for quality and skilled manpower, Patnaik said while inaugurating the workshop organised by Biju Patnaik University of Technology on ‘‘Present and Future Perspectives of Technical Education.”
He said the economic globalisation, technological innovation, industry-ready requirements and national policies are redefining knowledge and skill expectation in the present scenario.
Along with quality faculty in technical education, the universities should take expeditious steps for revision of curriculum and syllabus with thrust on soft skill development, industry exposure and inter disciplinary studies.
Patnaik further said special care should be taken for encouraging research and development activities in the institution to meet the needs of industry.
The curriculum should also adhere to the non-negotiable academic calendar.
A good educational model is essential to ensure students grow to contribute towards the development process and there should be continuous innovation in learning process and content.
Patnaik said education system can no longer remain grounded in theory. Research, inquiry, creativity, innovation, techno-savvy approach, entrepreneurship and adaptation to contemporary developments are necessary for technical education.
‘‘The last 100 years have generated huge knowledge data and value addition in a continuous process and we must give our students the skills with which they find a way through the ocean of knowledge, and continue with lifelong learning, he said.
He said technology has made education easy but competitive but if we do not harness our opportunity and go ahead with perspectives of future, we will lag behind as global economic and technological development is highly correlated to higher technical education, Patnaik remarked.
Orissa, Patnaik said, has taken initiatives recently to integrate formal and non-formal education sectors. Initiatives have been taken to define the skills relevant to industry requirements in order to address the emerging issues of employable technical manpower.
The state, the Chief Minister said, is aiming at providing the best technical knowledge and skill to its youth to compete in global scenario. UNI
