Bhubaneswar, Oct 13: The three committees constituted recently to counter West Bengal’s claim over the origin of the Rasagolla have submitted their interim reports to the state government Monday.
“We have received the interim reports from the committees Monday. The panels have stated that there is conclusive evidence on the use of Rasagolla in the state from about 600 years ago. The sweet dish was being prepared in temples and mutts from that time,” science and technology minister Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy said here.
The panels have sought one month to submit their final report, Panigrahy said. “After receiving the final reports, we will take our next course of action,” the minister said.
The state had September 21 had formed the three committees to help stake its claim over the origin of rasagolla and get the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. One committee was formed to collect evidence, another to examine the basis of West Bengal’s claim and the third for collecting the documents to support Orissa’s stand.
Orissa and West Bengal are fighting to establish that the sweetmeat originated in their state. Bengal believes it was invented in Kolkata by confectioner Nabin Chandra Das, while Orissa claims that it was used in the holy city of Puri as long ago as the 12th century.
