Cuttack, Oct 19: Andhra Pradesh defeated Uttar Pradesh by six wickets in a low-scoring encounter at the Nimpur Ground here Monday to win the Women’s under-19 title.
Put into bat by their rivals, the Uttar Pradesh batswomen failed to get going against some disciplined bowling by the AP bowlers and could manage only 112 for nine in 50 overs. Except for Deepti (56, 123b, 6×4) none of the other UP batswomen managed to reach double figures, the second highest scorer being Mr. Extras on 24.
All the AP bowlers contributed to the UP downfall with E Padmaja (3/25) emerging the highest wicket-taker. However, it was spinner M Bhavna (10-4-9-2) who really caught the eye. C Jhansi Lakshmi (2/20) and Sarnya Gadwal (1/23) also supported Padmaja and Bhavna well.
The AP batswomen did not have any problems chasing down the target. Openers N Anusha (18) and M Durga (20) put on 41 runs for the first wicket. Then Padmaja (36 n o, 53b, 7×4) and Jhansi Lakshmi (23, 36b, 3×4) ensured a smooth victory for AP with some calculated batting. Only Tanu Kala (10-2-27-2) caused some problems for the AP batswomen.
Brief scores: UP 112 for 9 (Deepti 56, E Padmaja 3/25, M Bhavna 2/9) lost to AP 113 for in 40.5 overs (E Padmaja 36 n o, Tanu Kala 2/27) by six wickets.
Orissa lose
Orissa under-23 cricketers went down by an innings and 87 runs to Haryana in the CK Nayudu Trophy match which ended at the VSS Stadium in Sambalpur, Monday.
Orissa, who had started the day after conceding a first innings lead of 258 runs, could not do much in their second innings also and were bowled out for 171 against some brilliant off-spin bowling by Rahul Tewatia (6/65). None of the hosts’ batsmen were comfortable against the spinner and the team folded up rather meekly.
However, it did not seem that a collapse was imminent as the two Orissa openers Rakesh Gochayat (28, 35b, 6×4) and Gourav Mohapatra (28, 84b, 5×4) put up 48 runs for the first wicket. But after their departure, none of the other batters save skipper Priyatosh Pramanik (37, 78b, 5×4) could handle the opposition attack.
Brief scores: Orissa 176 and 171 (Priyatosh Pramanik 37, Rahul Tewatia 6/65) lost to Haryana 434 by an innings and 87 runs.
