BATTLE FOR ATTENTION

Bhubaneswar: Shivam Pathak, the composer who carved a niche for himself with hits ‘Sukoon Mila’ and ‘Salaam India’ in the Priyanka Chopra-starrer biopic ‘Mary Kom’, was in the city for a concert Saturday. The young musician, who is busy with new projects including Gangajal 2 and Dhanak spoke with Orissa POST on his musical journey and plans for the future. Excerpts:

Q-After appearing on the reality show Indian Idol 2010 you remained virtually invisible till 2014. What happened?

A-After the show, I decided that I wanted to move on and realised that I needed to do something different. I stopped performing at programmes and concerts, and trained hard for two years. During the period I also composed music. The offer for Mary Kom came in that period.

Q-‘Sukoon Mila’ was one of the best songs in ‘Mary Kom’. Where did the inspiration for that song come from?

A-I don’t know. I had been working on the music sitting at home. I strummed a tune on my guitar and suddenly everything fell in place. Sanjay ji (producer of Mary Kom Sanjay Leela Bhansali) liked the tune for Sukoon Mila and immediately decided to include it in the movie.

Q- You are yourself a good singer. So, why did you not also sing the song?

A-Arijit Singh is a leading singer in the industry. I thought it would be much better it he sang the song and that people would love it if he sang my composition. The outcome is there for you to see.

Q–Which do you love more, singing or composing music? In what role can we see you more in future?

A-I love both; so, I haven’t decided anything yet. Right now I am composing music as well as singing. I will do whatever Bollywood offers me as a singer and as a composer.

Q- Tell us something about your future projects?

A-I am working on four upcoming movies in which I have either sung or composed music for. I have sung for Prakash Jha’s ‘Gangajaal 2’ and Nagesh Kukunoor’s ‘Dhanak’ and composed music for another movie. Ankit Tiwari will sing my songs.

Q- What is your favourite music?

A-I love metal rock and to entertain people with music of the genre. Besides rock music, I like classical Indian music and have been learning it for the past few years.

Q-As a rising newcomer in the music industry, what is your advise for youngsters from small towns looking to make a career out of music?

A-Musicians should listen to good music, both Indian and western. It is really essential to learn Indian classical music as it would help one to understand what one is signing.
