Bhubaneswar: Students of Rama Devi Women’s University who were detained Thursday held up traffic Friday afternoon demanding the resignation of the officer on special duty Padmaja Mishra over the incident.
A few students belonging to the National Students Union of India (NSUI) along with a few others took to the streets Friday, burnt tyres and disrupted traffic from Rupali to Vani Vihar square for two hours.
Soon after the road blockade, police personnel arrived at the site and persuaded the agitating students to clear the traffic. “We have been detained by the security personnel Thursday for no reason. We are students of this university and have every right to attend the function. We need an explanation as to why they did this to us,” said Priyanka Khuntia, an agitating student.
NSUI spokesperson Sulochana Dash and Bharatiya Janata Party member Prabhati Parida along with MLA Radharani Panda met the agitating students and the varsity authorities over the incident.
Truptimayi Behera, who was also detained by the police, said they will lock up the university Saturday if they do not get a satisfactory answer. “We have asked the officer on special duty to explain why we were detained. We will go to human rights commission Saturday, if the situation warrants,” said Behera.
Notably, 20 students of the institution were detained by police on the campus during the first inaugural function of RD Mahila University Thursday in view of possible attack on the convoy of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who was the chief guest of the function.
