Cuttack: Tension ran high at SCB Medical College and Hospital here Friday after a patient, Padmalochan Nayak (60), from Dhusuri area in Bhadrak district, died due to alleged medical negligence.
Narayan Roul, the brother-in-law of the deceased, alleged that the doctor who asked for a catheter for Nayak, who was writhing in acute pain due to a stomach-related ailment, was absent when the catheter was brought. “The doctor did not turn up to treat Nayak despite my repeated requests. My brother-in-law’s stomach swelled too much and he died at 7.30pm,” said Roul, who created ruckus on the hospital premises and allegedly manhandled a junior doctor at the casualty ward.
Later, several junior doctors gathered there and called police. Manglabag police rushed to the hospital and detained Roul. SCBMCH superintendent Pratap Rath said the patient was critical when he was brought to the hospital. “The doctors treated him immediately, but he died. There was no negligence on our part,” Rath clarified.
