Cuttack, Dec 18: Mohammed Abdur Rehman, who was arrested Wednesday for his suspected links with a regional branch of international terrorist organisation al-Qaeda, was recruiting youths for the outfit, according to information received by the commissionerate police (CP).
CP sources said Rehman was motivating youths to join al-Qaeda and imparting on them training on Jehad (holy war).
“Rehman had recruited two youths, one each from Hyderabad and Bangalore, for the international terrorist outfit and managed to send the two youths to Pakistan a few months ago. Delhi police have detailed information in this regard,” said a senior official of the CP.
There are reports claiming that Rehman had hosted a few terrorists operating in Ladakh and Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir at his house in Pashimakuchh under Jagatpur police limits in the past.
He was in regular contact with the higher-ups of al-Qaeda, added the official.
According to CP sources, police found several incriminating footages from the CDs seized from Rehman’s possession.
“Some footages depict Rehman delivering hate speeches at various religious programmes and openly exhorting youths to join al-Qaeda,” said an official of Jagatpur police.
Sources said police found several threads of evidence regarding Rehman’s close association with the terrorist outfit from his tablet. The tablet also has a few footages showing Rehman undergoing training in combat gears normally used by terrorists and instructing others.
“The places seen in the footages are believed to be in Karachi and Dubai. Delhi Police have engaged an information technology expert to collect more information from Rehman’s tablet. Persons familiar with Urdu literature have been roped in to interpret the documents seized from Rehman,” said sources in Jagatpur police.
CP sources, meanwhile, claimed that Rehman has imparted training to at least five youths of Jagatpur area.
“We are tracking the activities of people associated with Rehman. We will involve his family and relatives in the investigation process depending on the situation,” said a police official.
