Raikia, Dec 20: The carcass of an elephant calf was recovered from Sunapali jungle under Karada forest section and this range in Kandhamal district Sunday. The animal aged about four years might have died two days ago, forest officials said.
The matter came to fore after locals noticed the carcass and informed the forest officials. However, the reason behind its death is yet to be ascertained as the carcass bore no injury marks, divisional forest officer Prakash Chandra Gugnani said.
The actual reason can be ascertained after post-mortem, he added. The dead calf is suspected to be part of a herd which is regularly straying into the area for last one month and destroying crops in farmlands on the fringes of the forest. The route passing through Dakarbadi, Barimunda, Kendukhai, Nitibadi and Gajalbadi has turned into an elephant corridor.
