Cuttack, Dec 23: The safety of peacocks in the Naraj-Talagarh region of Cuttack district has become a cause of concern in the wake of the recent deaths of 18 peacocks in Madhupur forest in Khurda district.
Residents of the area have urged the forest department to take immediate steps for the safety of peacocks in Talagarh area of Chandaka wildlife division.
Around 40 peacocks and peahens have been spotted by residents of the area in the Naraj-Talagarh region, according to sources. However, the forest department is yet to take steps for the safety of the birds.
“Around 40 peacocks and peahens have been spotted near Talagarh. On occasions, a few peacocks move close to human settlements. The forest department has not taken any step for the preservation of peacocks in the locality,” said Prasant Paital of Marthapur.
Panu Behera, a senior citizen, claimed that locals have formed a group of volunteers to look after peacocks.
Foresters have been directed to submit a report regarding the number of peacocks at Talagarh area, said Abhaya Kumar Jena, assistant conservator of forests for Chandaka-Damapada range. “We plan to conduct regular patrolling in the locality to facilitate safe movement of peacocks,” Jena said.
