Nimapada: Handing out exemplary punishment to an obstetrician and gynaecologist for carrying out illegal sex determination and abortion, the court of Nimapada Judicial Magistrate of the First Class (JMFC) sentenced the doctor to two years of imprisonment Friday.
It has now been the talk of the town here.
Back in 2004, the doctor in question Dr Bachaspati Dash had a clinic named ‘Family Health Research Centre’ at Jayashree Chowk here in Puri district. He had also obtained license from the State Health Department to conduct Ultrasound test at his clinic.
But there had been allegations that illegal sex determination and abortions were being facilitated at the clinic.
Taking note of the allegations, the then Puri Sub-Collector, Udhav Charan Majhi and the chief district medical officer (CDMO) had conducted a raid on the clinic in 2004.
Registering a case against the doctor, they had seized all the equipments at the clinic.
While hearing the case, the JMFC court convicted the doctor Friday and awarded him two years’ jail term. A fine of Rs 7,000 was also slapped on the doctor.
