Cuttack, Jan 16: Top players won matches of both the rounds at the Cuttack District Chess Championships, which was inaugurated at the Barabati Stadium Indoor Hall here Saturday.
Nine senior players are leading the pack with two points each after the completion of the second round. They are Ashirwad Swain, Sumit Kumar Banarjee, Johnson Sahoo, Rabindra Ojha, Narayan Swain, Biswajit Ray, Sanjeeban Nayak, Rajat Kumar Sahoo and Smaraki Mohanty.
In the junior segment, 12 players are sharing the top spot with two points apiece. They are Nilsu Patnaik, Vaibhav Singh, Aryan Arnab Samantray, Ankita Sahoo, Shreyash Patnaik, Sarthak Debata, Swapnil Priyadarshi, Shreejita Khuntia, Jagdish Panda, Pratyanshu Kar, Sumit Biswal and SP Suryapranjal Indrajeet.
Mahesh beaten
Mahesh Mohapatra of Orissa was defeated by Denim Yadav of Madhya Pradesh in the second round of the U-14 boys’ singles event of the Road to Wimbledon AITA MPTA National Series Tennis Tournament at Indore, Saturday.
Denim got the better of Mahesh 6-0, 7-5. Earlier Mahesh had beaten Vaibhav Singh Bist of Uttar Pradessh 6-4, 7-3 in the first round.
Keonjhar win
Keonjhar scripted a huge 10 wickets victory over Bolangir in a match of the Sumit Bose Memorial OCA U-16 cricket tournament at the Ravenshaw Ground here Saturday.
Opting to bat first, Bolangir were bundled out for a paltry 54 in 21.2 overs. Debashis Naik (4/4) bowled well for Keonjhar. In reply, Keonjhar had no problem in chasing the target down as they completed the formality in only 13.2 overs.
In other matches, KIIT defeated Jagatsinghapur by 170 runs, while Ganjam triumphed over Mayurbhanj by 128 runs.
Officials appointed
Susanta Chandra Mohanty was appointed as match commissioner and Sradhanjali Samantray was roped in as a scout by the AIFF Saturday, for the upcoming Sub-Junior Girls’ National Football Championships starting here Sunday.
Colts victorious
Bhubaneswar Colts defeated TCS by seven wickets in a match of the E-League cricket at Bhubaneswar, Saturday. Opting to bat first, TCS were bundled out for 146 in 39.4 overs with Partha Pani (56) emerging as the highest scorer. In reply, Colts rode on brilliant half centuries by Sarthak Priyadarshi (61 no) and Dibyajyoti Pradhan to romp home in 26.3 overs for the loss of three wickets.
Dixitpada triumph
Dixitpada beat Chilika by three wickets in a match of the cricket event in the Sports Festival at Nachuni, Saturday. Opting to bat first Chilika scored 148 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply Dixitpada knocked off the target in 14 overs for the loss of seven wickets.
