Puri: The Srimandir Jagmohan is in urgent need of renovation, said a group of technical experts who examined the 12th century shrine Tuesday.
Jagannath temple technical committee members, as well as experts of the Archaeological Survey of India and two Delhi-based private agencies with expertise in renovation of ancient structures, examined Jagmohan.
The team of experts raised alarm over the dilapidated condition of Jagmohan’s interiors, sources said. The team detected several cracks on the structure, especially near the northwest and northeast corners. It also found some parts of the ceiling dilapidated.
The team photographed and videographed the dilapidated portions of Jagmohan for further analysis. It also held a meeting to discuss ways to mend the crumbling structure.
Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) sources said ASI has engaged two Delhi-based private agencies to renovate unsafe portions of Jagmohan through carbon wrapping. Srimandir technical committee member Dharmaprasad Mishra said the expert panel examined Jagmohan and discussed ways to renovate the structure.
“Two ASI-engaged private agencies have suggested mending the dilapidated portion of Jagmohan through carbon wrapping. We will take a decision in this regard after gathering details on the new technology and its efficacy,” Mishra said.
The technical committee has asked the Delhi-based private agencies to furnish a report on the use of carbon rapping technology in the renovation of other monuments and ancient structures of the country, sources said.
ASI employees will initially peel away the white coat on Jagmohan and expedite the renovation work after the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the temple February 7, said ASI superintendent Jivan Patnaik.
