Cuttack: Scores of parents of the students of Railway Oriya Primary School here held a dharna in front of the school Thursday to protest against the alleged detention and corporal punishment meted out to a class-V girl Wednesday by three teachers who accused her of stealing Rs 100 from the bag of one of them.
Malgodown police registered a case in connection with the incident after Chhabi Parida, father of the schoolgirl, Ranjita Parida, lodged a complaint.
The three teachers—Sangeeta Das, Swagatika Nayak and Bindulekha Nayak—had allegedly detained Ranjeeta in a room after recess for two hours and beaten her up with a cane and a ruler. Ranjeeta, who sustained injuries on her hands and thigh, was allowed to go home only after her elder sister, a student in the same school, begged for mercy.
Sangeeta Das said Ranjeeta was only “warned and mildly beaten up”. Swagatika Nayak and Bindulekha Nayak, however, denied the allegations against them. School headmaster Sarada Malla said the girl had not informed him about the incident. PNN
