Most of us must have seen coded words such as BOX, BOXN, BOXN-HA etc. written on train wagons. Ever wondered what all they mean? Here is your answer.
All the wagons are not of the same type. While some are covered, some are open and even some are flat. And those coded words tell us about the different types of wagons.
Before understanding the meanings of these specific acronyms, let’s first understand the meanings of the letters that form the words.
B stands for Bogie, O for Open, C for Covered, F for Flat Open, T for Tankers, X for high-sided wagons, A, N for Air Breaks and M for Military Consignments.
Now come to the acronyms.
In case of open wagons, there are BOX, BOXN, BOXN-HA, BOXN-CR, BOST, BOY and BOB wagons. BOX means bogie open high sided, BOXN means bogie open high sided with air breaks, BOXN-HA means bogie open high sided with air brakes with higher axel load suitable for 100 kmph speeds, BOXN-CR means bogie open high sided with air brakes with corrosion-resistant steel, BOST means bogie open for finished steel products and high capacity, BOY means bogie open with low sided and BOB means bogie open hopper for metal ballasting.
