Puri: Around 10,000 people, including many youngsters and senior citizens, thronged VIP Road in the city here Sunday to participate in the first Raahgiri Day.
The holy city became the second urban settlement of the state after capital Bhubaneswar to organise Raahgiri Day.
Collector Aravind Agarwal, who inaugurated the event jointly organised by the district administration, city municipal body and Rotary Club, advised people to forget their differences and unite for the greater good.
Municipality chairperson Jayant Sarangi asked voluntary organisations to participate wholeheartedly to make the event popular. Many political activists, government officials, students and members of cultural organisations, as well as some tourists, enthusiastically participated in the event that was organised at PKDA Square and Subhas Bose Square on VIP Road.
Several programmes, including cycling, skating, painting, boxing, orchestra and traditional dance forms, were organised as part of the Raahgiri Day celebrations.
